A Long Overdue Update

January 29, 2011 1 comment

One moment while I brush the dust off this blog. Okay, we’re back in business …

So much to fill you in on! Where do I start? When last I posted, Emmett had finally started saying ‘mamma,’ and while he still sometimes prefers to call me ‘dadda,’ it’s pretty much a regular thing now.

In other news, we had a great time visiting my family in NJ and PA for Thanksgiving, and I think it’s safe to say Emmett and his cousin Gus became pretty good friends, despite the occasional sharing mishap.

Emmett also experienced his second Christmas in Boston and Maine and was much better at opening presents than he was a year ago. His favorite gifts included a harmonica from Gran Lucy and Grandpa Mac and a new laptop (video) from GranD and Nana.

Emmett’s SpongeBob themed second birthday warranted a fun visit from Aunt Lulu (video), Nana, GranD, Uncle Shawn, Aunt Sara, cousin Ben, and a few friends and resulted in a new basketball hoop, some yummy cupcakes, and Emmett’s first sledding experience.

So … what now? I’m pleased(?) to announce that we’re now embarking on the exciting new adventure that is… POTTY TRAINING!

Brace yourselves, everyone. James and I are sure to be in for a wild ride…

Happy Birthday to the Gusbuster!

July 7, 2010 Leave a comment

Today my awesome little nephew, Gus turned 1!  I just got back from spending a few days in Michigan visiting my family and celebrating his birthday, as well as my brother-in-law’s birthday and the 4th of July in an all-in-one extravaganza.  Needless to say, my sister the event designer made sure it was fabulous!

Emmett had some reservations about Gus at first, but in the end, I think he warmed up to him.   Here are a few shots of the birthday boy and the awesome weekend.

Happy First Birthday, Baby Lump!

January 16, 2010 5 comments

I have a million things to do to finish getting ready for Emmett’s party today, but I couldn’t leave his first birthday without a post on the blog, so here’s a quickie…

I’m going to be completely trite here and just say it — man, does time fly!  Exactly a year ago today I was being admitted to my hospital room at MGH in excruciating pain, waiting to welcome my little baby lump into the world (at 11:47 a.m.), and now he’s a whole year old!  Happy Birthday, Emmett!

I spent most of last weekend putting together Emmett’s baby book (yes — an actual book, with pages), which meant I spent a lot of time reviewing Emmett’s major milestones within the past year, mainly through pictures.  While I realized I have about a googolplex’s worth of photos of Emmett, James and I both agreed that the following is one of our favorites (he’s about 9 months here).  And feel free to leave some Happy Birthday wishes for Em in the comments.  It’s been an awesome year!

Stay tuned early next week for a birthday recap.  I’m assuming there will be tons of messy cake pictures to enjoy!

The Apple Remedy

November 11, 2009 1 comment

Emmett spent last weekend up in Maine with Gran Lucy and Grandpa Mac to give James and I some time alone to celebrate our 2-year (dating) anniversary.  While it was fun to do some adult things like go out to dinner in Harvard Square, have intelligent conversation and see a movie at the theater, I’m not gonna lie – I missed the little goober.

Of course he just had to do some growing while we were away.  Lucy noticed a budding tooth in the front, top row of his gums while he was in her custody, which has without a doubt contributed to his crankiness this week.  Luckily though, Lucy also came up with what I’m calling the apple remedy: a semi-peeled apple for Emmett to chew on, which really does the trick.   It keeps him occupied, and it feels good on his gums.  A lifesaver!  Check out the apple remedy in action:

Welcome Baby Benjamin!

Benjamin Alec finally graced us with his presence yesterday afternoon, following a 2-day long induced labor and subsequent C-section (phew!).  Mother, father and baby are all doing well despite their excruciating exhaustion.

Congrats to new parents, Sara and Shawn – you two were definitely troopers!  Ben clocked in at 8 lbs., 11 oz. and 21.5 inches long at 2 weeks late.

Now for a look at the handsome little fellow …

A Birds Date Poem from Dad

January 14, 2009 4 comments

So my family does this cute little thing where we call one’s birthday his or her “birds date.”  Today I received this lovely little poem in my inbox from my father dearest:

awesome cupcake baby

Happy Birthday to my youngest daughter,

Who waits in Boston for the breaking of her water.

Will Lil Lump choose this day to make her a mama?

Or is he/she waiting for the inaugural of Obama?

Regardless, today you’re three and twenty.

So I hope you enjoy your day aplenty.

You’ve officially made it to U-24!

Is it cold up in Boston?  I blame Al Gore.

Thanks, Dad!

I’ve been overwhelmed will all of the birthday wishes today.  Thank you to everyone who has wished me a happy birds date on facebook, twitter and via text message or phone call (I can’t believe how many of you there have been, and the day is only half over!), and thanks in advance to those who will do so later today.  I feel so special because of you!

As for sharing a birthday with Baby Lump, it doesn’t look like that’s going to be the case at this point.  Even if I went into labor right now … Wait a minute … No … That was just a swift baby kick to the rib … Anyway, even if I went into labor right now, I doubt my labor would be speedy enough to enable me to pop out a baby by midnight.  And though, yes Lauren, it would’ve been “totally cosmic” to share a birthday with my baby, I agree with my mother that Baby Lump should have his/her own day to celebrate.  Besides, that will totally mean I get to chow down on two separate birthday cakes within the span of one week for the rest of my life!  Not too shabby …
